about

This is a song that uses the juxtaposition of Roosevelt Island and Manhattan as an analogy to assess mental isolation and the importance of physical proximity to others.

This song started as an acoustic singer-songwriter track with the diverse and ambient sounds of Virginia's landscape, starting with the sound of the woods. This ambience shifts into the sound of the coastal beaches, the tidewater swamplands, and the James River. In doing so, the sound of Virginia really takes shape and creates a feeling that we can only characterize as the "end of summer bittersweet."

The subtle sadness that accompanies the end of summer inspired the subjects we explored in the lyrics; mental isolation and physical proximity to others. We used Roosevelt Island and Manhattan as an analogy for how one can be calm and solemn internally, detached from the life and excitement of others. However, having others around can really make all the difference.

To further explore the feelings I was exploring, I took influences from cinematic compositions and eventually added subtle layers of string sections, choirs, organs, and even 4th of July firecrackers. With all this in place, I brought a friend and Richmond based rapper in for a feature, Emmett. He brings an energy to the track that shifts the song from one of my more traditional ballad into an alternative R&B tune. And I am so grateful for his influence on the track, giving it a unique touch.

We hope that the various sounds and diverse genres intermingling in this track create a listening experience that pushes the audience to consider the meaning behind sound gradients.

lyrics

Fahim:
As-salamu alaykum
So it goes

Castle in the sky
Found a puddle looked it in the eyes
Couple close calls but that's alright
Couple closed doors hope they're alright
On the other side, the other side, the other side
Roosevelt Island, the city never sleeps
But I'll stay quiet, the way you looked at me
Is enough to be, it's enough to be
Alright

We'll be alright, we will be

Emmett:
Fuck it
Usually I take the loss and stay in my pain bruh
I ain't paid to run
I follow up
Took a train to know me
But I remain along the east coast
I'll run it back just to not be alone
Piece the world that made me
Glad I love my baby
Have you involved I know
Having you left to lose
I'm on this independent pain
I'm going to smoke that pack
I've been sad

Watch me ride through the flood
I'm gonna hold up two deuces yeah for my number 1
Sola
